NightmareSoccer Premiership - end of season report

RECORD BREAKERS BUCK HANG ON TO BE CROWNED OVERALL CHAMPIONS

Congratulations to Bring Back Buck who are the Overall Champions of NightmareSoccer Premiership 2008/9. After spending most of the season top, Buck almost lost out as Level 3 Ref came within 3 points of catching them on the final week. Richard Hancy's overall Champs first hit top spot on Week 6 back on Sep 24th, for a single week. They returned to the top for 3 more weeks on Weeks 10 - 12. Then they were back on top on Week 16, and have stayed top ever since - a total of 33 weeks on top. Manager Richard becomes the 2nd manager to have won both NightmareSoccer Premiership and SPL, having won the Scottish competition 2 years back.

Last season saw Castacoldeye become the first English team to pass the 1000 point mark in a season, as they established a record score of 1041. That total is now only the 4th highest as 3 teams passed 1050 this season - with Buck setting a new record of 1076.

3rd placed We're useless can perhaps consider themselves the unluckiest team in NightmareSoccer this year. Despite scoring 1051 points, they have not even qualified for next season's Champions' League. That's because Useless finished 2nd in Vindaloo Division Two. We're useless will have to be satisfied with a place in next season's new competition the Eur'opeless League - which replaces the UEFA Cup.

CARSON SETS NEW HIGH

With a couple of months of the season remaining, Scott Carson looked well on the way to becoming our first Nightmare to reach 200 points in a season. A poor finish though saw him fall 6 points short, although he does still set a new high with 194 points - 17 better than our previous best of 177 set by Paul Robinson (the goalkeeper variety) back in 2003/4. Carson was easily top of the list, with his team mate Paul Robinson (the defender variety) 2nd with 161 and Kevin Nolan 3rd with 151. Honourable mention for Nicklas Bendtner who managed to come 4th with 149 despite playing for one of the Premiership's "big 4".

Steven Gerrard is this season's worst Nightmare with -94 points. Often near the 'top' of the list in the last few seasons, it's the first time Gerrard has won this accolade, and he deposes Cristiano Ronaldo who was only 4th worst after 2 consecutive seasons as the worst Nightmare. Ronaldo joined Alan Shearer and John Terry as the 3 players that have been the worst player twice; while Sami Hyypia managed this achievement 3 times. Frank Lampard is 2nd worst this season with Nemanja Vidic 3rd.

HESKEY PASSES 1000

Emile Heskey holds on to top spot in the all-time list with ease, with another impressive season with 108 points; his 3rd highest season to date. Heskey has now amassed a total of 1074 points. Kevin Davies stays 2nd with 940 (75 this season), while David James climbs 5 places to 3rd with a 142 point season (total now 915). Last season James fell 4 places to 8th after a -28 point campaign.

At the other end, John Terry is still top of the all-time worst Nightmares list. -17 this season takes his total points to -368. Sami Hyypia stays 2nd following -22 points on what looks like being his last season (total now -343). Thierry Henry stays 3rd with -252, Steven Gerrard is up 4 places to 4th (-251) while Rio Ferdinand stays 5th.
